Cenote Saamal and Hacienda Maya, near Chichén Itzá Before a delicious traditional Mexican meal at a Mayan Hacienda we can see and take pictures in the impressive cenote Saamal (we will swim only in the cenote Palomitas as the last activity of the day). This activity and treasure of nature is included in our excursion in Chichen Itza and Ek Balam as it is located approximately about 8 km away from the archaeological site on the way to Ek Balam.
Cenote Saamal is a “semi-enclosed” cenote with a circular shape, very similar to the Ik kil cenote, but much less crowded, it has a special charm with beautiful vines, creepers and water filtrations, that is why it is considered one of the most impressive cenotes in the Riviera Maya. Cenotes for the Maya were gateways to the underworld and were present in their rituals.
The circumference of the open type Cenote is 70 meters and can be surrounded to observe its dimensions and beauty. It is one of the largest and most beautiful cenotes in the Riviera Maya, as others in the area are usually very modified by man.
And we continue! Our excursion to Chichen Itza and Ek Balam Cenote does not end here, we still have to visit the pyramid of Ek Balam. We will do it on the way back, since we still have time to visit the archaeological site of Ek Balam.
These Mayan ruins built more than 2,000 years ago are very well preserved and have 17 restored buildings, including the typical ball game that for the Maya meant a kind of battle between the living and the underworld (in Mayan called Pok ta Pok).
It also has an astronomical observatory and its acropolis, the largest building in the Yucatan Peninsula, 168 meters wide and 106 steps, where we can climb and enjoy spectacular panoramic views.
It is possible to climb the stairs without any problem, but care must be taken with the steps to avoid tripping. We assure you that it is well worth climbing these stairs, because once at the top of the highest pyramid of Ek Balam we will be able to observe the jungle surrounding the ruins.
These views are surely the best you can have in the Riviera Maya along with those of the pyramid of Coba (Nohoch Mul).
And of course… we’ll finish the day with a super refreshing swim in the cenote Palomitas! After climbing the Ek Balam Pyramid The best thing that will do us good is a swim in this beautiful cenote Palomitas. We will go down some stairs to the Palomitas Cenote, one of the most beautiful subway cenote in the Riviera Maya full of stalactites and stalagmites. The most outstanding feature of this cenote is its crystalline fresh water, and we are sure that we will take with us the best memories of this cenote. cenote Palomitas of the Riviera Maya.
And that’s as far as we’ve come! This is just a glimpse of what you can discover and experience on this excursion to Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam. Do you dare to enter the Mayan world?

Our excursion agency is known for leaving very early in the morning to be the first to arrive at the archaeological sites.
Early in the morning there are hardly any people and it is much less hot, so arriving early you will certainly be able to take the best pictures of the day. You will notice that when we leave the ruins a lot of people start to enter.
In Spain the exchange rate from euro to Mexican peso is usually very low, both in banks and at the airport exchange houses. The best place to find it is in Playa del Carmen on Quinta Avenida. In the hotels you will also be able to change money and the exchange rate will be a little lower than in Playa del Carmen. If you are planning to go to Playa del Carmen you can take advantage of it. If you are not going to change much, it is not really worth going specifically to change, you can do it at the hotel.
The Riviera Maya is Mexico’s tourist destination par excellence and a major destination for tourists from all over the world, which is why maintaining tourist safety in this state is fundamental for the government.
Our advice is that you can move around the Riviera Maya with total tranquility, always taking the same precautions as in any other place (go through the tourist areas and do not go into the suburbs, at night go accompanied…). It is a place to enjoy it to the maximum with total tranquility!
It depends on where you use it. If it is in the hotel or in prestigious establishments, there should not be any inconvenience. It is true that there is a lot of card cloning fraud in small establishments in Playa del Carmen.
